05 · Using Claude for Analysis & Research Tasks

Beyond writing, Claude is often used to think through a problem, compare options, or make sense of information — analysis and research tasks. This module covers how to prompt for structured comparisons, how to ask for reasoning you can actually check, and where to be careful (a preview of Module 9's deeper look at limitations).

Structured comparisons

A vague "what do you think" invites a vague answer. Naming the criteria you actually care about produces something you can act on.

Asking for reasoning, not just a conclusion

For any analysis with real stakes, ask Claude to show its reasoning, not just hand you a verdict. This does two things: it usually improves the quality of the answer (working through steps tends to catch errors a jumped-to conclusion wouldn't), and it gives you something concrete to check rather than a bare assertion to either trust or distrust blindly.

Worked example:

Prompt: "We're deciding between raising prices 10% across the board or introducing a new higher tier and leaving current pricing alone. Walk through the tradeoffs of each for a subscription product with high price sensitivity, before recommending one."

A reasoning-first response would work through churn risk, revenue impact, customer perception, and implementation complexity for each option before landing on a recommendation — giving you visible logic to check against what you know about your own customers, rather than a single unsupported sentence.

Using Claude to structure a research question

Even before you have information to analyze, Claude can help you sharpen a fuzzy research question into something answerable.

This use of Claude — as a thinking partner for structuring the question itself — is often more valuable than asking it to just answer a vague question directly.

Where to be careful

Analysis and research tasks are exactly where Claude's limitations (Module 9) matter most, because a wrong analysis can look just as confident and well-organized as a right one.

How It Actually Works

Asking Claude to "show its reasoning" isn't asking it to reveal a hidden internal computation — it's changing what gets generated, which in turn changes what the final answer ends up being. That distinction matters a lot for how much to trust structured analysis.

Generated reasoning becomes part of the model's own context. When you ask for step-by-step reasoning before a conclusion, each reasoning token the model writes gets appended to the sequence and is then attended to when generating the next token — including, eventually, the conclusion. In effect, the model's own visible reasoning becomes additional conditioning for its answer, in the same way a fact you supply does. This is the real mechanism behind why asking for structured comparisons and worked reasoning tends to produce better, more consistent conclusions than asking for a verdict directly: laying out criteria first genuinely constrains what conclusion is statistically coherent to generate next, rather than jumping straight to a plausible-sounding answer with nothing forcing it to be consistent with anything.

But visible reasoning is not a window into a separate "thinking" process that already happened. There is no hidden calculation that the displayed reasoning merely reports on — the displayed reasoning is the computation, in the sense that the tokens Claude writes as "reasoning" are generated the same way as any other output, and can themselves be wrong, incomplete, or disconnected from a genuinely correct process while still reading as fluent and logical. A confident-sounding chain of reasoning is still a plausibility-optimized generation, not a proof.

This is why the "flag anything that fails a test" pattern works better than "what do you think." Naming explicit pass/fail criteria forces specific, checkable tokens (which option satisfies criterion X, does it or doesn't it) into the generation, which you can then independently verify against the source material — rather than accepting a fluent-sounding overall judgment that's harder to audit token by token. Structuring the ask doesn't make Claude more likely to be right in some deep sense; it makes the reasoning legible enough for you to check it yourself, which is where the real reliability gain comes from.

Exercise

Pick a real decision you're weighing (work or personal — which tool to adopt, which of two approaches to take, etc.). Write a structured comparison prompt naming at least three specific criteria, and a follow-up asking for step-by-step reasoning before a recommendation. Then write one sentence on which specific claims in the eventual answer you would want to verify yourself before acting on it.
