Cypress Mastery Path¶
Most Cypress tutorials show one cy.get().click() and call it done — and never explain why Cypress code
looks synchronous but isn't, why cy.intercept matters, or why a test that passes alone can fail in a full
run. This course builds the real thing: a real local Express application built specifically as a test
target (login, a todo API, file upload, iframes, deliberately slow endpoints), a real Cypress 16 test
runner driving it through every lesson, and the real custom commands, network stubbing, and CI setup that
turn a handful of scripts into a maintainable test framework.
This course was written and run against a real local Express test-target app and the real, installed
Cypress binary — no mocked browser, no invented command output. Every DOM query, every cy.intercept,
every "this is why the command queue behaves this way" finding in this course comes from an actual Cypress
run against an actual local web app.
It assumes basic JavaScript comfort and does not re-teach general software testing fundamentals (test case design, the defect lifecycle, manual testing) or deep framework topics like BDD/Cucumber, API testing, or mobile testing — those are already covered well by the Java Testing and Python Testing Mastery Paths. This course goes deep specifically on Cypress itself — its in-browser architecture, the command queue, network stubbing, and component testing — in a way those broader courses don't have room for. For Selenium's WebDriver-based model, see the Selenium Mastery Path; for Playwright's multi-browser, multi-language model, see the Playwright Mastery Path — this course compares against both honestly in its final level.
How the program is organized¶
| Level | Focus | Modules | What you can do after |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 · Cypress Fundamentals | Install/config, DOM querying, interactions, assertions, auto-waiting | 10 | Write and run a real Cypress test against any real page |
| 2 · Intermediate Patterns | Custom commands, fixtures, cy.intercept, cy.request, file upload, hooks | 10 | Write maintainable tests with real network control |
| 3 · Architecture & Advanced Techniques | The command queue, aliases, cy.session, flaky-test diagnosis, CI | 10 | Understand why Cypress code behaves the way it does |
| 4 · Component Testing, Scaling & Comparisons | Component testing, cy.origin, plugins, Cypress vs Selenium/Playwright | 10 | Scale and ship a real Cypress framework in production |
Each level has 9 teaching modules plus a hands-on project (module 10), for 40 lessons total.
How to use this site¶
- Run it yourself. A real local Node/Express app (
npm install) and Cypress itself (npm install cypress, which bundles its own Electron browser) are all this course's core lessons need — no cloud testing service, no paid Cypress Cloud account. - Read the "What was run" note at the top of each lesson. The overwhelming majority of this course's commands, stubs, and test results come from a real, observed Cypress run against a real local page; anything that genuinely couldn't be run locally (a multi-account Cypress Cloud dashboard) says so plainly.
- Do the "predict, then run" exercises. Cypress has several behaviors (the command queue's deferred execution, retry-ability's real limits, same-origin constraints) that are easy to miss from reading alone and genuinely clarifying to watch happen against a real page.
- Do the projects. Each one is a real, runnable test suite against the real local test app, not a diagram.
